If you’re looking for an indoor outing this weekend, dodge the raindrops with a visit to the Cartier and America exhibition at the Palace of the Legion of Honor. There’s nothing like gallery after gallery of diamonds and exquisite pieces of jewelry to brighten your day.
The Real Story was skeptical about an exhibition of such enormous wealth. It somehow seemed excessive and indulgent, given our current economy and world events. But there was something fascinating about connecting faces and stories to some of the most famous pieces of jewelry ever created. Elizabeth Taylor’s earrings, Princess Grace’s wedding jewelry (including her engagement ring), the Duchess of Windsor’s famous flamingo brooch. . . these are accessories that witnessed history. The exhibit showcases the craftsmanship and versatility of the house of Cartier with over 300 pieces of jewelry, clocks, and works of art from the Belle Époque to the 1970’s. Excessive? Certainly, but absolutely enjoyable.
This Sunday, the Legion will host a special Curator Lecture on Cartier and America at 2 p.m. in the museum’s Florence Gould Theater. It promises to impart special insight into the role of Cartier jewels in American history and culture. The lecture and jewelry demonstrations are free with museum admission.
If the clouds should part, be sure and enjoy the views from the front steps of the museum.
